About

Tomas Sarnell is built around defense, court coverage, and physical consistency. He is rarely the fastest starter in a match, but he is known for pulling opponents into long sets and forcing them to finish points repeatedly — a habit that earned him the nickname “The Brno Wall” long before he cracked the top 40 of the ISTC Obsidian Tour.

Born in Brno on May 28, 2003, Sarnell grew up on the slow red clay of the Brno Movement and Matchplay Center, where he later served as the academy’s defensive-pattern training lead from 2019 to 2021. While studying Exercise Science and Coaching at the Central Morava Sport Institute and competing for the Morava Stags, he developed the analytical approach to movement and recovery that still defines his game. He turned professional in 2021 and now trains out of Prague under longtime coach Pavel Doren.

Sarnell’s rise has been steady rather than sudden: a semifinal run at the 2023 Cormont Clay Classic announced him on the Obsidian Tour, a fourth-round showing at the 2024 Southspire Clay Major confirmed it, and his breakthrough title at the 2025 Tessara Clay Invitational carried him to a career-high ranking of No. 29 in August 2025. Opponents describe playing him as an exercise in patience — every ball comes back, every rally gets longer, and the match is decided by who blinks first. Sarnell almost never does.

Off the court he is understated and methodical, splitting his time between Prague and Brno, where he still runs occasional movement clinics for juniors at his home academy. He speaks Czech, English, and Slovak, and credits his university background for a career built as much on physiology as on forehands.

Every point has another ball.

Playing Style

Sarnell is a defensive counterpuncher in the classic clay-court mold, built on elite movement and an apparently bottomless willingness to hit one more ball. His game is not designed to overwhelm; it is designed to outlast. Rallies against him stretch past the point where most opponents are comfortable, and the errors that follow are exactly what his patterns are built to harvest.

The Weapon

His signature shot is the running forehand pass — struck at full stretch and on the dead run, it turns opponents’ approach shots into liabilities and makes the net a dangerous place to visit against him.

The Method

Sarnell’s tactical strength is extending rallies and forcing low-percentage attacks. Depth, height, and relentless court coverage push opponents into going for lines they would not normally aim at — and missing them.

The Trade-Off

The serve earns him few free points, so nearly every hold is a working hold. He compensates with patience, physical resilience, and a stubborn refusal to give away cheap errors, especially on clay — with outdoor hard courts his second-best surface.
